Nesting Time!

As you explore our gardens or any garden for that matter, be watchful for  birds and other small animals nesting in the area.

This Killdeer was spotted in our gardens protecting her nest. She fans out one wing and drags it along the ground as if wounded to distract unwanted predators from her nest.

They have one or two eggs, sometimes three and they guard them well.

So be watchful of our nesting friends as you look around the gardens.

Add Color to your Garden!

We have many perennials that can add color to you landscape.

Salvias are great for adding color.  We have many varieties to choose from such as Sallyfun  Blue Emotion and  Snow White Salvia.  They like full to partial sun and attract hummingbirds and butterflies.

Celosia (Argentea var. spicata), also commonly known as Pink Flamingo or Feather Flower is great for floral arrangements.

The Northern Lights Pentas also attracts hummingbirds and butterflies.

Upright Verbena or Brazilian Verbena

(Verbena, Bonariensis) -

is a beautiful plant that will attract butterflies to your garden.  It is a native plant and very drought tolerant.  It takes full to partial sun and the flowers are great for cutting and are gorgeous in dried arrangements.

It will grow 36" to 48" high.

The 'Lollipop' ( Dwarf Purple Top) is a cousin of the Upright Verbena but it has a short, almost mounding growth habit and will grow 2' high by 2' to 3' wide.

Roses

Come out and see our beautiful selection of  Tea Roses!

This variegated beauty is called Rock-n- Roll!  Even the baby Praying Mantis is attracted to its mixture of creamy white and red colors.

And the Mother of Pearl gives any garden that soft classic look.

The Tahitian Sunrise Rose will give your garden that special pop!

And who  doesn't love the white blossoms of the Sugar Moon and

the deep velvet color of the Drop Dead Red!

All these roses are highly fragrant and bloom all summer long!

Gardenias are Blooming!

Nothing says "Southern Landscape" better then Gardenias! The white blossoms against the lush green foliage and sweet aroma just screams "Southern Charm"!  We have gardenias here at Savannah's Secret Gardens and they are in bloom now!

Belmont Gardenia
(Gardenia jasminoides)

The Belmont Gardenia is a rare vintage.  An estate variety, it produces huge rose-like, creamy blooms.  Plant in full to partial sun.  It will bloom in early Spring, though, we often find flowers on it right through the fall.  It will grow to a height of 7'.

Frost Proof Gardenia

The Frost Proof Gardenia is a prolific bloomer.  The flowers are 2"-3" and  grows in a symmetrical upright form against narrow green foliage.  It blooms in late Spring to Fall.  Its a great hedge plant or a center piece for your flower bed.  It will grow up to 5' tall and 4' wide.  Plant this beauty in partial  to full sun.  This is a favorite among growers since  the flower buds can resist the late Spring frost.

Fountain Care for the Winter

The most important thing you can do for your fountains this winter is when the temps are going to drop below freezing be sure all the water is drained out of your fountains.
As you can see we forgot to do this with our fountains at Secret Gardens. It was beautiful and fun to look at but the fountains could have cracked if it had been colder and the water had frozen solid.

Care for your fountains now and you will have them in good shape come time to run them again in Spring.
